Where to Stay in Athens (and Where Not to Stay!)

As a local who loves sharing the best of Athens, I’m here to help you find where to stay in Athens for a memorable visit!

This city blends ancient history and modern life effortlessly, and choosing the right neighborhood can make your trip safe, convenient, and unforgettable. With this guide, you’ll get local insights into the best spots and areas to avoid, ensuring you make the most informed decision for your stay.

Neighborhoods to Approach with Caution

Omonia

Although central and close to major transit hubs, Omonia has a reputation that can unsettle even the most adventurous traveler. The district’s bustling streets echo with energy, but beneath the surface lies an edgy atmosphere marked by safety concerns. Once night falls, the vibrant chaos can shift to a tense, unpredictable scene.

As a local, I’d advise against staying in Omonia. While it holds a central spot with major transit connections, its shadowy corners and restless energy can be more trouble than they’re worth, especially after dark. It’s a place better explored briefly, not for setting down your bags.

Metaxourgio

As a local, I’d say Metaxourgio is not the ideal place to stay in Athens. While it’s true that this district is in the middle of an artistic rebirth, filled with bustling main streets, charming cafes, and intriguing art spaces, the scene shifts quickly.

Stray just a bit too far, and you’ll find yourself in quieter, less inviting streets that don’t have the same lively, welcoming feel. Its edgy atmosphere makes it worth a visit for its unique charm, but staying there might not offer the level of comfort and safety most tourists look for.

Attiki, Stathmos Larissis, Victoria, Agios Nikolaos

These areas might catch your eye on a map thanks to their central locations and convenient transport. But as a local familiar with every corner of Athens, I’d encourage you to think carefully before choosing these neighborhoods for your stay. While they’re accessible and practical, they often fall short in charm, vibrancy, and the level of safety that many tourists hope for.

These areas can feel somewhat detached from the lively, historic heart of Athens that makes the city so captivating. They may suit budget travelers, but often lack the rich character, great dining options, and welcoming atmosphere of more popular areas. Safety, especially in the evenings, can be a concern as the vibe shifts, making some streets feel less inviting.

Neighborhoods with Mixed Reputations

Monastiraki

Monastiraki is a vibrant, historic district that’s perfect for those who love being right in the heart of the action. With its iconic flea markets, street vendors, and close proximity to ancient landmarks, this area pulses with life day and night. It’s an exciting place that many tourists enjoy, especially if they thrive on lively energy and don’t mind the constant soundtrack of music, chatter, and street performances.

However, Monastiraki comes with its share of noise, which could be challenging for light sleepers or those seeking peace and quiet. While the busy areas feel safe, quieter, dimly lit streets can be less secure and are best avoided at night. If you’re drawn to the buzz and don’t mind a bit of chaos, Monastiraki can be a thrilling choice—with just a few trade-offs!

For a stay that matches Monastiraki’s dynamic vibe, consider Muse Urban Suites, a sleek, modern option just steps from Monastiraki Square. It’s perfect for urban explorers looking to wake up to stunning views and dive straight into the city’s excitement. For a more luxurious experience, Mythos Luxury Suites blends elegance with Monastiraki’s vibrant energy, offering a relaxing retreat in the heart of the action. Meanwhile, Acropolis Urban View is a spacious and cozy choice, ideal for couples seeking romantic vibes, plenty of room to unwind, and incredible views for a dreamy getaway.

Psirri

Psirri is one of those neighborhoods in Athens that truly captures the local vibe. As a local, I can tell you, it’s a great spot if you love nightlife, quirky bars, and hidden spots with character. By day, it has a relaxed, almost bohemian feel, with its small cafes, art spaces, and vintage shops. But come nighttime, it completely transforms into one of Athens’ most exciting districts, full of bustling bars, tavernas, and clubs.

That being said, Psirri isn’t for everyone. While it’s packed with energy and atmosphere, it’s also noisy—especially late into the night—and can get a little chaotic on weekends. If you’re after a more peaceful experience or a good night’s sleep, this might not be the best fit. Also, some of the more remote corners can feel a little gritty, so while it’s generally safe, it’s wise to stick to the well-lit main streets after dark.

For a stay that matches Psirri’s dynamic vibe, consider Bed in Athens, which boasts modern, stylish rooms and a rooftop terrace with stunning city views. It’s right in the heart of the neighborhood, so you’re just steps from all the action. If you’re looking for a bit of indulgence, Belle Athenes Luxury Rooms is an excellent choice, offering spacious, beautifully designed rooms with a hot tub and a terrace—perfect for unwinding after exploring the vibrant streets. For something a bit different, Medley Athena stands out with its unique musical theme, cozy atmosphere, and close proximity to Monastiraki Square.

Exarchia

Exarchia is one of those neighborhoods in Athens that’s a bit of a love-it-or-hate-it area. As a local, I’d say it’s not for everyone, but it definitely has its charm if you’re looking for something different. Exarchia is known for its alternative, rebellious vibe—full of street art, independent cafes, and quirky bookstores. It’s also a hub for students and activists, so there’s always something happening, whether it’s a protest, a live gig, or a community event.

For a stay that matches Exarchia’s unique vibe, consider Nana’s Residence, offering modern, comfortable accommodations just steps from the action. For those who want a more elevated experience, Penthouse at Center offers a chic, spacious retreat with stunning views over the city. Meanwhile, the My Greek Vacations City Apartments is ideal for those wanting a cozy, central base to explore this fascinating area.

However, Exarchia can feel edgy and unpredictable, especially for first-time visitors. While the main streets are bustling and relatively safe, some of the quieter corners can feel a little rough, and the atmosphere at night can be intense. If you’re looking for an authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience, Exarchia is perfect. But if you prefer peace and quiet or a more traditional tourist vibe, it might not be your best choice.

Premium Neighborhoods for Tourists

Plaka

Plaka is the beating heart of Athens, where the ancient and modern world collide in a beautifully dance. As a local, I can tell you this area is nothing short of caprivating. Nestled at the foot of the Acropolis, Plaka is an unforgettable place to stay, where every corner seems to tell a story of Athens’ long and colorful history. The narrow, cobbled streets are lined with picturesque neoclassical buildings, lively tavernas, and cozy little shops offering everything from hand-crafted jewelry to local delicacies.

It’s an atmosphere that’s equal parts charming and electric, where the energy never quite stops. But, as much as it’s a dream to visit, the reality of staying here is that it’s also one of the most expensive spots in Athens—so be ready for a splurge. Still, for that once-in-a-lifetime experience, staying in Plaka means you’re not just visiting Athens—you’re living it. The proximity to the Acropolis alone makes it totally worth the price tag.

For accommodations, Plaka offers fantastic options that reflect its charm. Electra Palace Hotel Athens stands out for its luxurious design, rooftop restaurant, and stunning Acropolis views. Guests love its prime location and relaxing rooftop pool, perfect for enjoying Plaka in style. For a modern vibe, The Marble Suites offers sleek apartments with fully equipped kitchens. Makrygianni

If you want to stay close to the Acropolis without the chaotic crowds of Plaka, then Makrygianni is the perfect choice. As a local, I can tell you this neighborhood has its own beauty—quieter, but still vibrant and full of life. Picture yourself wandering down peaceful streets, past charming cafes and cozy local restaurants, all while the Acropolis looms just a short walk away. Makrygianni is a beautiful blend of ancient history and modern living, offering easy access to cultural gems like the Acropolis Museum and the Parthenon, but with the kind of calm and charm that Plaka sometimes lacks.

The area is safe, welcoming, and feels a little more like the Athens locals know and love. Whether you’re grabbing a coffee in the morning or enjoying a traditional Greek meal in the evening, it’s a neighborhood that perfectly balances relaxation with adventure. If you’re looking for an authentic experience that’s just steps away from Athens’ treasures, Makrygianni is the sweet spot between convenience and serenity.

Lastly, AD Athens Luxury Rooms & Suites is a boutique favorite with chic rooms and friendly service, perfectly located near the Acropolis Museum and great local spots.

Syntagma, Ermou Street, and Kolonaki

If you dream of living in luxury while soaking in all that Athens has to offer, then Syntagma, Ermou Street, and Kolonaki are where you need to be. As a local, I can tell you this area is the epitome of elegance and style. Syntagma Square is the city’s bustling heart, surrounded by landmarks like the Greek Parliament and the National Garden. It’s the place to feel Athens’ pulse without ever leaving the center.

What makes this area truly shine are the designer shops along Ermou Street and the chic cafes and galleries of Kolonaki. Here, luxury meets culture, perfect for those who love high-end dining, shopping, and art. While staying here is a splurge, it’s an unforgettable experience. With the Panepistimio metro station nearby, you’re set to explore all corners of Athens from the best location in the city.

Visitors highlight its chic atmosphere and central location. For something boutique and elegant, InnAthens is praised for its stylish design, tranquil courtyard, and proximity to Syntagma Square and Plaka.

This area, just a stone’s throw away from Makrygianni and the Acropolis, has gained a lot of love from tourists for its calm yet vibrant vibe.

It’s safe, walkable, and feels like home. What makes Koukaki stand out is its proximity to iconic landmarks, like the Acropolis Museum, while still offering a peaceful retreat after a day of sightseeing. Neos Kosmos and Mets are two of Athens’ hidden gems, offering an authentic, residential experience. As a local, I can tell you these neighborhoods feel worlds away from the touristy crowds, yet they’re still close enough to everything you’ll want to see. Mets, in particular, is a favorite for its picturesque, narrow streets, neoclassical homes, and a serene ambiance that’s perfect for a relaxed stay.

Neos Kosmos, while a bit livelier, has its own charm with its mix of residential and commercial spaces. You’ll find plenty of local cafes, family-run shops, and cozy restaurants here, giving you a taste of everyday Athenian life. Both areas are wonderfully safe and well-connected by metro. As a local, I can tell you both areas are brimming with character and charm.

Pagrati, with its friendly atmosphere, is home to a variety of local shops, street vendors, and tavernas that serve some of the best home-style Greek food in the city. Ilissia, on the other hand, is quieter and a bit more residential, but still close to major attractions. Both neighborhoods are full of hip cafes, quirky bars, and contemporary art spaces that give them a lively, creative feel.

The streets are buzzing with energy, but in a way that’s still cozy and laid-back. Thissio adds its own charm, with its stunning views of the Acropolis and its picturesque streets lined with neoclassical houses. It’s the kind of place where you can enjoy a peaceful stroll by day and vibrant socializing by night. Together, Petralona and Thissio combine the best of both worlds: bohemian, artistic atmospheres with easy access to the city center and major attractions.
